Hey!
are you looking for a super-cheap place in fairfax with a couple cool peeps? or do you know anyone that is?
KT and I are looking for a new roommate ASAP, as we were just given TWO WEEKS notice by our current roommate.
SO, here's the skinny:
We live in a 3br, 1 1/2 bath, 2 story townhouse in the Mosby Woods Condominiums in downtown fairfax. Rent is $450/mo which includes gas and water (which is sweet considering we have gas heating & cooking, keeps the electric bills down). Phone/Internet and electricity are extra, and in our experience average about $100/mo (depending on time of year). Our place is extremely private with only woods/creek view in front of the house and relative privacy from our nearest neighbors via a 12 foot offset wall. Access to public transportation is literally a five minute leisurely walk down to Fairfax Boulevard where there is access to all 4 local Cue Bus lines and the Metrobus 1C which runs from Fairfax Hospital to Dunn Loring Metro to Fair Oaks Mall and back. ALSO we are TOTALLY public transportable from Mason and Nova Annandale, with buses every 15 minutes most days to and from Mason. 711 and CVS are also a literal 5-7 minute walk away. There are two available parking passes (one for you and one for a guest/boyfriend) but at that, the lot is super-copious and we've parked many times with no pass and have never been towed. Should all that fail, we have TONS of street parking for parties and the like. Other amenities include: porchside trash/recycling pickup biweekly, neighborhood pool and basketball courts <100 yds away, groundskeeping, 3 parks within walking distance including a new turf soccer field & space-age playground<150 yds away, etc etc.
Now on to the room itself, It's 12'x10' with a large closet, and next door/catty corner to the full bathroom. Nice blinds and very large windows with aforementioned woods/creek view and a nice large ceiling fan. It's a 3br townhouse, but KT and I share a room so the center bedroom is being used as a study. our house in general has a lot of built-in shelving to house all your books/dvds/cds/records/collections/curios/knickknacks, and there's plenty of room on the walls for whatever art you've got. Also, just speaking from personal preference, I am a huge fan of the exterior/interior architecture of the place, with a curved entryway from eating nook to kitchen a la the simpsons, and a simple 60's style to the exterior.
what else is there to say? KT and I are both pretty clean (but not too clean) living people and would prefer to live with someone of that same mindset. obviously rent is due first of the month and bills mid-month, and there's a $300 deposit upfront. I mean come on! where else in fairfax city are you going to find a place this cheap and with these amenities? also, if any couples are interested, we split the rent evenly so rent would only be $340/person and we would certainly consider the right couple. One last thing you ought to know is that we have cats and cannot bring any new pets into the situation, so people with pets or allergies should consider this.
well that's about it, PLEASE let us know if you're interested. the room will be available as early as two weeks from now (Oct 1st) or as late as Nov 1st. You can email me at jay.cardinell@gmail.com, contact me at home at 703 865 4500 or even come by and look at the place, 10001 mosby woods dr fairfax va 22030.
Thanks! Be In Touch! Love!

check it out, katie and I are going to the ""SCION ROCK FEST""
::mimics wanking motion::
seriously though, this is like five years worth of good dc shows in one show. there's no fucking way on earth to see all the good bands as many of them are playing at the same time, so here's about how our day is going to go.
Kylesa Torche Salome US Christmas A Storm Of Light Harvey Milk Krallice High On Fire Neurosis Mastodon/Coalesce(not sure on this one, their new stuff is ehhhh) Converge
too bad it had to be sponsored by a car company but how can you say no to the best east coast fest in ages if not ever particularly when it's fucking FREE (not including transportation and housing for the night before which will be $$$)?
and just to throw it in there, Mulperto/Jon is lending/renting us his fucking car for the weekend due to some strange cosmic alignment in which he is housesitting in arlington for the exact days that we will be gone for. I love you Jon, and so does the universe. =)

I can't believe nobody I know posted anything about the inauguration. We went and it was fucking amazing. Somebody told katie they saw her on tv, and it does look like they swept over where we were standing (south side of the WWII memorial) a few times.
Obama is the fucking man. watching the republican clients at my job squirm while talking about him is so fucking satisfying.
here's to the next 8 years!!!

been a long time since I've posted here, so I'm just gonna ramble about things that've happened since I last posted.
got fired from interpunk for "stealing" a pack of cigarettes from a co-worker who happens to smoke the same brand as mine and also happened to leave them sitting on a table. the "suits" however had no sympathy and no concept of an "honest mistake" and fired me with no qualms. very punk. very inter-punk. to make money on something like punk rock I suppose you have to be pretty cutthroat and with pretty loose moral fabric so I suppose it follows, right? anyhow I've since been working at whole foods in fair lakes so if anyone ever wants to say hi, I'm always running register there.
whole foods is cool, nice employees and nice customers in general, but still the same kind of clusterfuck management that I've come to expect from every retail place I've ever worked. that said, they started me at $10 so it's hard for me to feel very "complainey" about the understaffedness and lack of attention or praise. plus, brien stewart will start working with me imminently which I'm sure will make me feel even better about it.
also since I've last posted, durga temple played our final show to a basement full of almost all of the people I would have wanted to be there. I don't really have a whole lot to say about this except that durga was pretty much priority one for a large part of the last 5 years and though it's sad to see it go, there's other cool shit in the pike and it was a pretty fitting end for a pretty awesome band.
ambition burning is my main new band with brien stewart on vocals, troy from durga on guitar, and our friend ben from vog on drums. crazy, old-school-new-school fast as shit punk rock. the plan is to record the 7 songs we have down and once we have a cd out to start seriously concentrating on playing shows and writing more new material.
in other band news, pat paul quit the bible under duress, and basically told us all to fuck off. I don't want to get terribly deep into that, but suffice to say that ben from ambition has agreed to play drums and we've also got chris (sax player from the pussy whisperers) on board. I don't know how soon we'll be playing together but I am pretty confident that this lineup will be able to crank out some seriously funky shit. we're not going to be playing cover songs anymore so it's going to force us to find a sound and write some shit which I am definitely really excited about.
anyhow, hayley's here and we're going xmas shopping so I gotta jet. you all take care of yourselves, and come visit me at whole foods or at home if you get a chance.
later!

got this off myspace, and I liked it, so I post it here.
The Ultimate Concert Survey...
1. How Many Concerts have you been to? Hundreds
2. Name every artist you have seen live. I don't think this would be possible. I'll give it a go though, and list them off the top of my head: Frodus, Suspects, Darkest Hour, Neurosis, Tragedy, Pg.99, Pietasters, Blue Meanies, Toasters, Primus, MELVINS, Positive State, Majority Rule, Queens Of The Stone Age, Konono No.1, Bis, Less Than Jake, Metallica, Soundgarden, Wu-Tang Clan, Plaid, Nobukazu Takemura, Matmos, Murs, Aesop Rock, Mr. Lif, Camu Tao, Candiria, Pig Destroyer, Reverend Horton Heat, High On Fire, Bongzilla, Cave In, Ire, 16, Grief, Cardigans, Shellac, Bad Wizard, Dixie Witch, Earth, Aus Rotten, Citizen Fish, Boris, Dystopia, Kylesa, Physics, Burned Up Bled Dry, Paindriver, Spazz, His Hero Is Gone, Enemy Soil, Drugs Of Faith, Dropdead, Los Crudos, Brant Bjork, Fugazi, Nine Inch Nails, Assuck, Weedeater, Noothgrush, Hellnation, Capitalist Casualties, Phobia, The Hidden Hand, Green Day, Pearl Jam, Melt Banana etc etc etc etc ad nauseam
3. Who do you want to see live? Jimi Hendrix... not possible, unfortch.
4. First concert and age you were? Primus / Melvins, 13
5. Last concert and age you were? Salome / Lord @ strangeland, 26
6. Next concert? that I'm not playing? Probably will be Secret Chiefs 3 / Sleepytime Gorilla Museum at the black cat, Apr something.
7. Best concert memory? Seeing Jello Biafra performing DK's songs with the Melvins as his backing band. happiest I've ever been to have my hand stomped on by a big boot.
8. Worst Concert memory? getting fucked with by skins at the Blanks 77 / MU330 show at mason back in the day was pretty bad. also many times of getting punched in the face or kicked in the groin or what have you in many "moshpits"
9. Small Venue/Huge Venue? small, duh.
10.Worst seat at a concert? anywhere that I can't see the band. scratch that. anywhere that I can't smell the band.
11. Best seat at a concert? the opposite, duh.
12. Have you ever been a part of concert history? I've been a huge part of my own concert history.
13. Best thing to buy at a concert? anything that will give the band money to get to the next gig. this excludes buying merch at any major venue i.e. 9:30 club, or any stadium, because hardly any of that money goes to the band. buy your shirt from their van after the show.
14. Do you buy food/drinks at concerts? drinks, yes. food, not generally.
15. Have you ever brought a sign to a concert? No, but a couple friends of mine at a fall silent show back in the day wrote "FALL" and "SILENT" on their undershirts (and left me out of their plan, damn it).
16. Age to start going to a concert? whatever age.
17.What's the earliest you've ever gotten to the venue? many many hours prior because of public transportation when I was a youngin'.
18. One concert memory that sticks out. well the jello thing. #2, seeing Neurosis was fucking mindblowing. OH and Nashville Pussy, having my face crammed in the guitarists latex-pants covered crotch. I was a pussy and didn't do anything cause "I had a girlfriend" and got a big thumbs down for not licking it up.
19. Favorite thing to do at a concert? drink, headbang, lose control in general.
20. Least favorite thing at concerts? Drunk Assholes: hitting on your girl, mashing you in the face, smelling like mayonnaise, or whatever else they like to do.
21. Funniest thing you've done at a concert? I'm not a very funny guy. all business. I did sing some nonsense lyrics for No Less once at a WMUC show where they passed the mic around. I guess that was funny. also scampering down handrails outside said show and having the one armed singer for Agents Of Satan tell my friends "your friend's really crazy". I guess that's funny?
22. Stupidest thing you've done at a concert? Getting wasted before driving home. never again.
23. Have you ever been in a moshpit? Countless times
24. Have you met new people at a concert? yesm.
25. Do you like concerts? what a stupid question.
26. Ever gone backstage at a concert? bunches of times.
27. Ever been checked by secuirty? well yeah.
28. Security ever take anything away from you? a dog chain necklace at lollapalooza 96, and that's about it.
29. Have you ever snuck something into a concert? Weed and a bowl.
30. Best way to end a concert? sweaty, exhausted, elated.

Y'all motherfuckers (all of you) need to stop doing fucking coke. a bump now and then is one thing (that I never partake in but that's beside the point), but doing it all the time is fucking you the fuck up.
call me a dick or whatever but I'm sayin'. if you're doing coke all the time it would seem to me that there's some other shit going on in your life that you gotta deal with, and coke (or smack, or whatever else) certainly isn't the way to get better.
just sayin' this because I am worried about my friends who are like family to me.

went to my brother's sentencing today for his dui/driving on suspended (habitual offender) and violation of bond agreement (again, dui/driving on suspended).
he was sentenced to three years jail time w/ two years of "monitored confinement" which I am taking to mean good ol' house-arrest.
you could say he got what he asked for, in that he definitely knew this was going to happen, and he was actually told the last time he got off that if he was caught driving again it'd be five years. so yeah, you do what you're gonna do and then you pay your dues or whatever. additionally, pretty much everyone involved in the situation agrees that things are better around here with him locked up. his wife's happier, his dog's happier, and his kids are certainly better off without a drunk cursing violent dad around as their only male role-model.
still though, it's a sad day. the only thing I can really say in his "defense" (not really) is that prison never helped anybody and that's a pretty immutable truth. I am not sure what would help him, but I am sure that prison is not the answer. it seems so ridiculous to me that our idea of crime deterrence and of governmental retribution is to lock you in a box for a certain amount of time and that's expected to make you not want to "do some crimes*" again. JT suggested that we should go back to using stocks and I think I might agree with that on a certain level. maybe the fear of public humiliation and sunburn and bruises from chucked fruit would work better than the fear of confinement. I don't have any answers as far as this goes, but I do know that our prison system is FUCKED UP and just keeps getting moreso. what to do what to do.....
that's all I got to say on that. y'all stay safe.

if I may quote from a master:
"So what else happened, man? I'm over in fuckin' England, and Bush fuckin' loses!...AAAH-HA HA HA HA! He's dead! It's dead! The Republican beast is fuckin' dead! Twelve years of that rampaging Republican fuckin' elephant-beast finally brought to its knees. Yes! You're dead, you fucker! You fuck! You fuck, you're dead! Dead! Dead! Dead! We hate you! Hate you! Now do you know it? Now do you feel it? Feel the fuckin' hate. Feel it. Call off your dogs. Call your little Vietnamese pot-bellied Rush Limbaugh back to your fold, you demon fuck! Bring Pat Buchanan back! Call him back, you lost! Finally...the Republican beast-elephant brought to its fuckin' knees. 'Cause I feel like me and my friends and all the artists in the fuckin' country were like little pygmy tribes shootin' darts at that elephant for twelve years, and finally (elephant trumpeting, then crashing noise). Do our little pygmy dance: (singing) Na na na na na na na! Na na na na na na na! Na na na! Yes!"

so I guess bush is suggesting, then, that we 'cut and run'??
sweet sweet schadenfreude:
Worried Bush retires Iraq slogan From correspondents in Washington October 24, 2006 US President George W. Bush has retired his "stay the course" slogan for Iraq, worried about its use as a weapon against his Republican Party in November elections.
"He's stopped using it," said White House spokesman Tony Snow today.
"It allowed critics to say, well, here's an administration that's just embarked upon a policy and not looking at what the situation is, when, in fact, it's just the opposite."
Opposition Democrats, hoping the unpopular conflict will help them take control of the US Congress in the November 7 legislative elections, have used the refrain in political advertisements accusing Republicans of sticking by a failed policy for waging the war.
Mr Bush appears to have last used the expression on August 30, when he vowed, "We will stay the course, we will help this young Iraqi democracy succeed, and victory in Iraq will be a major ideological triumph" in the war on terrorism.
"The president is determined not to leave Iraq short of victory. But he also understands that it's important to capture the dynamism of the efforts that have been ongoing to try to make Iraq more secure," said Mr Snow.
Earlier, senior Bush adviser Dan Bartlett flatly declared that, when it comes to Iraq, "it's never been a stay-the-course strategy".
"What we aren't doing is sitting there with our heads in the sand. We're completely changing and making tactical changes on a week-by-week basis as we respond to the enemy's reactions to our strategies," he told CBS television.
But Mr Bush and Mr Snow have repeatedly used the "stay the course" formulation over the past year, often to counter what the White House still calls the Democrats' "cut and run" push for withdrawing US forces from Iraq.

FUCK!!!!!!!!!
I dunno if y'all are aware, but I have a bit of an issue with getting up in the morning, and getting to work on time. luckily I have a boss who is pretty flexible and forgiving and usually doesn't worry about it.
regardless, I made a TRUE fucking effort today to get up on time and get totally ready and leave with lots of time to spare to get to his house (we were going to DC today and there's NO WAY I am going to drive to where we were going at that time of the morning).
I left at fucking 6:45 to get to Cedar Ln by 7:30. Plenty of time right? it's like 14 miles which is a ways, but still.... just the other side of fairfax.
I got there at 8:00. my boss was long fucking gone.
I am so upset at the fact that you can battle traffic as HARD as you fucking can, and still you fucking lose in the end. I am so upset at the fact that I can battle my sleep disorders as HARD AS I FUCKING CAN, and still fucking lose in the end.
fuck this fucking area man and its fucked up traffic which gets worse by the day, and fuck my fucking sleep disorder for ruining my whole fucking life.

I posted this as reply on the stonerrock/riffrock.com messageboard, but it's so long and convoluted I figured it deserved a repost here. plus most of you don't frequent sr.com and probably a lot of you have never heard a lot of this shit. the thread topic was "post bands you've been in"
whoa this ended up longer than I thought it`d be too. no one`s gonna read this shit. I limited it to bands that actually played shows.
Fink (1996/7?) - first band, two basses, one clean one distorted (can you guess which one was me?) guitar and drums. silly weird punk songs. I joined after they`d already been playing for a little bit. I don`t even remember what it sounded like any more, but we played a high school battle of the bands and one of the judges told me we sounded like Godheadsilo. COOL!!!!
Angel Eyes (1998-9) - Saw them play a house show in early 98 and after destroying their drumkit and thowing shit all over the place and choking themselves with the mic cords they said they needed a new bassist as the guy with the star wars figures glued all over his bass was going to focus on his teaching job. I had a bass and a guitar amp and was totally all about it. it sounded like a lot of gravity recs / tonie joy stuff i.e. heroin, uoa, etc. the "smash everything and make lots of feedback" thing was definitely a staple of the end of the set, which is cheesy in retrospect but gave me an opportunity to work off some of that 18-year-old angst. we had a "tour" in which we played Orlando, Buffalo, and Philly, all about a week apart. we had a much longer tour planned but since we barely even had a cassette demo the shit fell through and so we just played the dates we`d committed to. still we got to play with pig destroyer, godstomper and abstain which was weird. matt the drummer went on to be in Player Piano, did sound at the Warehouse Next Door in WDC, and now lives in NC. Marius the guitarist disappeared right after we broke up never to be heard from again.
Ohm (2003) - VERY short lived band with Scott from VOG (Lost It! at the time) and Nic from Krvnk/Chapter18. I wrote most of the riffs and it was huge crushing but melodic stuff. maybe like floor but not really? we played ONE show, but it was a doozey, with Bongzilla and 16! HOLY SHIT, it was like my fukken dream to play with those bands. I believe I have the only tape of any of the material and I don`t even know where it is.
Moesha Jenkins (2002-2004) - we played heavy fast stuff, maybe halfway between Helmet and Spazz, with a heavy dose of humor (though whether it was actually humorous or not depends on who you ask). we played a few really good shows (mostly basement shows) and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. claim to fame? we were the first of 12 (no shit) bands opening for Mastodon at a dive bar in woodbridge before Remission came out. we recorded an album by ourselves, put it out ourselves, and then the last thing we did was reform and record some oldies and a couple songs that never got recorded early in 2006. this got released as a split with:
Durga Temple (2002-2006) - hands down my most satisfying musical experience yet. I was in a real bad state and my friend Sean invited me to come play flipper covers with him to get me out of the funk. after doing this for a while we started writing some stuff of our own, and then invited our friend Pat (from moesha jenkins) to come play too. over the course of the years we totally grew from noisey nothingness to a fucking powerhouse (imho), added Troy on second guitar near the end, and put out a ridiculous amount of cds by our fucking selves. Totalling them up in my head right now, I believe it`s 8 cds worth. two of them studio recorded, one of them studio mastered, all the rest totally diy, and all put out on our label Rockjuice recs. thanks to some awesome friends of ours we played with some fucking KICKASS bands, the #1 standout for me being YOB!!! I think in our entire "career" we sold a total of maybe thirty cds, but gave out hundreds more than that for free. we played our lastish show this past friday and it was fucking awesome. I dunno what I`d do w/o the friends I made through having this band. ...oh yeah as far as sound, it was all over the map. someone at our last show said "melvins meets scared of chaka" but I dunno about that. melvins, rocket from the crypt, misfits, fu manchu all made their mark but it was pretty much just us playing whatever we thought sounded good.
Lilith (2003-current) - this is my "drone band" and probably my most "serious" effort to date as far as composition goes. me on bass and my friend SARS on laptop. we sit somewhere between Earth, Corrupted, and some cool dubby tabla shit you`ve never heard. we are fucking committed to an east coast tour in `07. anyone want to help?
thanks for humoring me.
